Former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga has criticized BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for ruining Sri Lankan cricket after the defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“Because of the relationship between SLC officials and Jay Shah, they (BCCI) are under the impression that they can crush and control SLC. Jay Shah is running the Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is doomed due to pressure from Jay Shah. A man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket. He is powerful only because of his father (Amit Shah), who is the Home Minister of India.”
Earlier Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe had dismissed the SLC board and installed an interim committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, but the Sri Lankan courts issued a 14-day stay order on the gazette dissolving the board one day. The board was later essentially reinstated. A few days later, the cricket board was suspended by the ICC with immediate effect due to government interference in the administration of the board.
At the same time, Sri Lanka finished ninth in the points table in the World Cup, which means they missed qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
