According to the news of Cricbuzz, Rohit Sharma had made a condition that he will take over the captaincy of the T20 team only when he is also given the captaincy of the ODI team. Due to this, the board had to take this decision in the end.
Earlier, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had said that he had asked Kohli not to give up the captaincy of the T20 team. But they did not agree. Due to this, the selectors handed over the captaincy to the same player for both T20 and ODI formats.
Virat Kohli, leaving the captaincy of the T20 team, said that he wants to continue captaining ODIs and Tests. The next ODI World Cup (World Cup 2023) is to be held in India itself. In such a situation, Kohli wanted to continue captaining the ODI team till then.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Kohli may withdraw from the ODI series for the tour of South Africa. However, the team for the tour has not been announced yet. For the Test series (India vs South Africa) starting from 26 December, Kohli has command of the team.
