Sri Lanka defeated the United Arab Emirates by 79 runs in a Group A match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Simmonds Stadium here on Tuesday. After their loss against Namibia, Sri Lanka made a good comeback and increased their NRR (+0.60) to take the Netherlands (+0.15) ahead.
Elected to bat first, an opening partnership of 42 runs between Pathum Nissenka and Kusal Mendis gave Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka a fine start. Despite Mendis’s wicket in the fifth over, Sri Lanka managed to score runs in the powerplay with over 50 runs.
Hat trick for Karthik Meiyappan
Sri Lanka were heading for a big total, but leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan turned the match around with his hat-trick.
The over caused the middle order to collapse, putting the pressure back on Sri Lanka. Meiyappan became the first player to take a hat-trick for UAE in T20Is. Sri Lanka managed to score 152-8 in 20 overs.
